FSI: 1, Snowstorm: 0

by Forrest Marbutt 17. February 2010 17:45

Three feet of snow. Downed power lines and an entire city paralyzed. Business owners trying to carry on with some semblance of normalcy. As the nation shook its head in wonder at the recent snowstorms that at times defied comprehension, FSI remained open for business with only minor adjustments in the fulfillment process. So when someone pointed out to us that there’s a benefit in having a fulfillment center in an area known for its mild weather, we had to agree.

FSI has always been located near major shipping hubs, including UPS and FedEx, our proximity to Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta and port in Savannah, has resulted in our ability to offer superb shipping options since 1996.

Granted, no one selects a fulfillment partner based on the weather, but in light of the recent severe weather we were thankful for the opportunity to continue on even as our out-of-state friends and family remain snowed in.

A Case Study in Returns Processing

by Forrest Marbutt 6. January 2010 18:22
No retailer likes product returns, but returns happen, and how you handle them dramatically influences the likelihood of customers purchasing from you again in the future. As a recent best practices article in MultiChannel Merchant reports, "there is a direct correlation between flexible returns practices and future customer orders" (click here for full article). And for catalog and Internet-based sales, a well designed and efficient returns process can set you apart in ways that add enormously to the bottom line.

As your strategic fulfillment partner, FSI is positioned to develop and implement a returns process that makes sense for you. As a quality provider of 3rd-party fulfillment services, we of course have a number of different ways to handle returns. Yes, it can be as simple as putting returned items back in stock and issuing an appropriate credit to the customer. But what if you need more?

After reading a related article, "Best practices for returns processing" in MultiChannel Merchant we decided to write a short case study on how we helped one of our Clients handle product returns. The Client in question is a well-known manufacturer of software and video game titles, for which we handle both original product shipments and returns. The volume can top 4,000 orders per day during peak ordering periods, and thanks to a generous return policy, product returns can be as high as several hundred per day.

So here was the challenge: how could FSI transform an expensive returns process in such a way that sustainable increases in efficiency could be realized while at the same time allowing the Client to remain in control?

The FSI Management and IT teams put their heads together and agreed that automation was the key. On a daily basis we received a single file containing all returned merchandise authorizations (RMAs) that our Client had processed on their web site. Any customer needing a product return could request it online, and the resulting RMAs sent to FSI on a daily basis. (FSI also has the capability of setting up online return processes on our web sites.)

With the RMA in hand, FSI developed a program that would automatically produce a shipping return label in electronic form and email it to the customer. No longer would the customer have to wait for a label to be mailed to them or have to pay for return postage themselves; they would simply print the label, affix it to their package, and drop the box off at the nearest UPS facility. This eliminated any postage costs that would have been used to send the customer a shipping label and got the label in their hands virtually within moment of our receiving and processing the RMA file.

With the label in hand, the customer then sent the return to FSI’s main fulfillment center near Atlanta, Georgia, where custom-designed returns processing software speeds the receiving process via barcode technology that instantly identifies the order. Customizable business rules such as requiring a dated sales receipt can be optionally enforced so that the returns process can keep up with your evolving returns policies.

One thing the MultiChannel Merchant article points out is the critical need to use information technology to track and monitor the returns process. To assist Clients with this need, FSI developed a “Master RMA Report” providing multiple views of data, including virtually every piece of data for any given RMA. Accessible from our secure reporting portal known as FSI Enterprise, this is one of the most valuable reports to this Client because it provides them with all the data they need to manage the RMA process without even involving the FSI Customer Service Team. That translates into quicker customer service decisions at a reduced cost. Have we received an initial RMA from the Client? Have we emailed them their shipping label? When? Have we received the actual return? When? Did we send the item back to the customer due to lack of proper sales receipt? If so, when and what was the tracking number? All this data and more is stored in a real-time database that allows the Client to know what’s happening in their returns department and provide a tangible way to improve their customer relations through the rapid, accurate handling of product returns.

Taking the returns process even further, we integrated with the Clients' own systems so that certain returns data automatically makes it back to the Client's system with no human intervention. So how effective was it? Was our development investment worth it?

To answer that question, FSI recently was awarded the returns management job for this same Client for a brand new product line that FSI isn't (yet!) even fulfilling. This is a textbook example of how FSI's innovation has helped our Clients in their business successes since 1996.

So how well does your returns process work? Could you use a partner who understands how a well-designed returns process can actually increase your profitability?

'Tis the Season...

by Ken Marbutt 20. November 2009 11:59
We all know this is such a busy time of year, and as the holiday volume inevitably goes through the roof, it's often hard to take the time to stop and just appreciate the many joys of the season. When FSI was founded in 1996 we started out with a great business model that continues to bring dividends to our many Clients. But in spite of all our automation and investment in systems, fulfillment is a labor-intensive process. So it is with great pleasure that the management team at FSI reflects on the amazing associates of FSI who make this all possible. We are truly proud of them and of their many accomplishments, and greatly value all that they bring to the table throughout the year.

Our hope and prayer is that you also will take the time to enjoy the season and remember the reasons you're in business. You offer great products, great services, and you know how many smiles you put on the faces of the people you come in contact with. Let those memories serve us well as we enter the most challenging time of year. And thank you so much for allowing FSI to continue as your strategic fulfillment partner. Merry Christmas from all of us!

Merry Christmas from FSI 2009

FSI Wins 2009 PIAG Golf Tournament

by Daryl Gramling 29. October 2009 15:54
Pictured left to right: Jay Gustafson, Lance Smith, Ken Donnelly, and FSI's Ken Marbutt

FSI has been an active member in the Printing & Imaging Association of Georgia for years, so we figured we might as well have the decency to win the 2009 golf outing. So just to show our support for this fine organization, FSI Founder and President Ken Marbutt and his team took first place in the Low Net division.

Now wait a minute. The number of golfing events Ken has won sure is growing lately. How can he have time for this and make sure FSI keeps Clients happy at the same time? We must be doing something right while he's out on the links...

FSI Pushes Client Products to Market for Early Holiday Sales

by Linda Williamson 28. October 2009 18:07
Atlanta, Georgia

Early projections for the 2009 Holiday buying season are up from 2008 numbers, but spending could still remain flat at $438 billion. This is why FSI is working feverishly with our Clients to deliver their new products and Holiday lines to market to secure a slice of valuable early Holiday purchasing.

In the consumer electronic sector, the latest gaming devices and gaming software will likely be in high demand for the 2009 Holiday season. With the economic downturn, more families are spending less on expensive outside entertainment options and travel. Home entertainment systems and game software become a great way to spend quality and fun time together. FSI is helping our gaming software Client to deliver three new product versions to market at strategic in-market deadlines beginning Oct. 27th and ending in mid November - right before for the busy Thanksgiving weekend and Black Friday. We hope this strategic timing on delivering product will put our Client right where they need to be, just in time for families looking for that special Holiday gaming purchase.

Our many apparel and accessory Clients are also pushing their product to market quickly during this pre-Holiday buying season. Containers from all over the globe are coming into FSI to be quickly turned around as merchandise is packed out for retail store deliveries. The quicker we get these orders to retailers, the sooner our Clients can reach the pocketbooks and reap the benefits of the savvy retail shoppers.

Even our B2B clients are getting “in the spirit” as the Holiday season approaches. The TV networks and agencies we support are rolling out unique and creative 3-D kits to the press to introduce their new line-ups and promotions. FSI is busy shipping everything from snow globes and mini refrigerators to tons of T-shirts, DVDs and press releases to promote the new shows. We even shipped 1,000 polar bear kits last week for a special soft drink corporate promotion!

Everyone is getting ready for the Holidays…what will your company do? If FSI can help deliver your promotions to market, we’d love to give you a gift that will keep on giving.

Re: Your Next Innovative Kit-Pack Job

by Daryl Gramling 21. October 2009 15:46
One of the great things about working at FSI is the chance to be involved with some really cool promotional campaigns for startups and Fortune 100 companies alike. Take our very first kit-packing job when the doors opened in 1996 for example. The job entailed 200,000 fun packs of various Spider-Man comics and a dozen related items for a national hotel chain. Or more recently assembling what appear to be giant Chinese-style takeout boxes filled with fortune cookies for a global news organization (no added MSG!). Or even a customized box sent to over 25,000 employees of the IRS that, when opened, an animated hand playfully pokes the recipient in the eye.

Now maybe I made up that last one, although of course we all agree it is a terrific idea. Please contact the FSI sales team if you’d like to partner with us on that one. But the point is we enjoy working with Clients who make an impact with novel and imaginative products and promotions.

And in this economy, innovation is key. Certain types of cutbacks are unavoidable, but bland marketing campaigns are almost worse than doing nothing at all. Check out the article Humor Me, written by Phaedra Hise and published in Deliver Magazine. It caught our attention because FSI is so good at handling these types of custom kit-packing jobs, which, as the article points out, can be enormously effective marketing tools.

Maybe your customers don’t need an enormous box of fortune cookies, but give them something to remember you by with the confidence that FSI delivers on each and every job.

FSI Joins the 2009 Make-A-Wish 5K Run

by Daryl Gramling 19. October 2009 16:11

A total of 27 FSI employees and friends joined in on October 17, 2009 for a 5K run sponsored by the Make-A-Wish foundation. Taking us through the historic Marietta Square district, the event was just one of many that occurred all over the country to raise money for children with terminal illnesses. The event organizer noted that FSI had one of the largest number of participants in the event that drew an estimated 1,015 runners. Wish.org reports that as of the time of the event, over 184,000 wishes have been granted. FSI is proud to have had a small part in the next one.

Is Outsourcing an Option for You?

by Forrest Marbutt 10. October 2009 18:01
Check out fulfillment consultant Curt Barry’s article in Multichannel Merchant magazine titled “Is Outsourcing an Option for You?”. Here he discusses steps a company should consider in deciding whether to handle this very important piece of your business in-house or to outsource it to an outside fulfillment company like FSI.

One of the main areas that the article touches on is the risk you take in achieving the same level of customer service as you now have in-house. FSI clients know this to be one of our strengths in that our CSR’s have been with FSI an average of 5 years, one of which has been with FSI all 13 years we’ve been in business! When you choose FSI, you are choosing experienced fulfillment industry veterans. Check out the article here:
